Three Explicit Skill Categories
Learn in a Flash has selected, visited and trained every single School House. We promote school staff, qualified teachers, and more experienced host families to School House status, those who are willing to adapt to our high standards. Hosts are listed under "Teaching Skills" categories visible on the live homepage filter, and students filter by the level they need.
Every School House listing shows its host's category. Filtering is available on the School Houses Directory. This explicit categorisation is one of the design decisions covered in Why School Houses.
Included Services in Every School House Stay
Regardless of category, every Learn in a Flash School House stay includes the same services.
- Breakfast, lunch and dinner — the School House provides the full board; lunch may be packed from Monday to Friday. Visit the School House pages to see their typical meals and the special diets they offer.
- Single or shared room — checking availability on the School House page, twin rooms may be shared with a foreign student (same gender and similar age); the price doesn't change. See School Mate Buddy.
- 30' of conversation time Monday to Friday — the School House dedicates 30 minutes to the student every day, from Monday to Friday, to speak about their day, their work experience, whatever they like. Mostly conversation.
- Pick up and drop off — the host picks the student up in town at an airport shuttle stop or even at the airport if more convenient for them, the same for drop off on the day of departure. Individual arrangements are not necessary for group departures, as the Group-Leader will lead students there.
- Weekend day with the hosts — the first Sunday the host family will do something with the student; visit the School House page to see what they usually do and their interests.
- Assistance — remote and on-site, with 24/7 availability in case of emergency, and clear pricing for exceptional events.
- No co-nationals — School Houses will not accept two students of the same nationality, unless you expressly request or allow it.
Optional Add-Ons
On top of the included services, students may ask their School House for more dedicated time. Prices vary according to School House; try the Price calculator for an estimate.
- 10 or 15 hours of conversation time Monday to Friday — individual or sharing with your School House Mates; the cost is shared among the students (when 2 or more). It is normally expected for 14 and 15 year old students in groups.
- Afternoon CLIL activities — every day the School House host will take the student to see places and do things.
Books, materials and exam fees are paid on top of what the School House charges for their time, as are admission tickets, transport and other extra costs of activities.
Who Can Become a Host

A host family may host up to 4 students at any given time. Learn in a Flash requires its School Houses not to host students of the same nationality or language, unless students explicitly request to share together — for example, 14 and 15 year olds travelling in pairs. On top of the standard included services, a host may offer optional paid add-ons: morning “lessons” (10 or 15 hours a week, in a homeschool-style structure) and afternoon CLIL activities.
