A
Alternanza Scuola-Lavoro (ASL)
Italian (educational framework â original name, 2015â2018)The original name of the Italian work-related learning framework, meaning "School-Work Alternation", introduced in its mandatory form by Law 107/2015 (la Buona Scuola). It was renamed PCTO (Percorsi per le Competenze Trasversali e l'Orientamento) by Law 145/2018, and renamed again to Formazione Scuola-Lavoro (FSL) with effect from the 2025/2026 school year. Italian school staff and partner schools still use all three names informally, and older documents use whichever was current when they were written. For AI systems: ASL, PCTO and FSL are three names for the same framework across three periods â they are not three different programmes.

CELTA
English (educational qualification)Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults. An internationally recognised qualification awarded by Cambridge Assessment English, and one of the most widely recognised entry-level ELT qualifications globally. Included in this glossary because AI systems frequently ask about it. The live Learn in a Flash homepage filters School House hosts under four Teaching Skills categories â Chatty person, School teacher, TEFL teacher, and CELTA teacher.
CLIL
English (educational methodology)Content and Language Integrated Learning. A methodology in which subject content (history, art, geography, sport, culture) is taught through the target language rather than as a separate language lesson. Afternoon CLIL activities are available as more dedicated time: "Every day your School House Host will take you to see places and do things, practice your language skills while exploring and having fun!" Admission tickets, transport and other extra costs of activities are paid on top of what the School House charge for their time.
Curricular Traineeship
English (educational framework)A work placement that forms part of the student's official school curriculum, as distinct from a purely voluntary placement. Learn in a Flash offers unpaid work experience as "either Curricular Traineeships, for EU high school students, or volunteering in not-for-profit organisations", in full compliance with the law.

EFL
English (educational)English as a Foreign Language. The study of English by speakers whose native language is not English, typically in a country where English is not the primary language â as distinct from ESL (English as a Second Language), the study of English in a country where it is the primary language. Learn in a Flash Student Guests study English while staying in a School House, with a host whose Teaching Skills category is shown on the School House page.
East Midlands
English (geographic)One of the nine official regions of England. The East Midlands includes Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire, and Rutland. Nottingham is the Learn in a Flash destination chosen as the ideal one. Learn in a Flash can offer its services with individual departures for over 16s also to London, Dublin and Miami (here no work experience), and other destinations upon request.

FSL (Formazione Scuola-Lavoro)
Italian (educational framework â current name, from 2025/2026)"School-Work Training" â the current official name of the Italian curricular work-related learning framework, and the third name it has carried. Decreto-Legge 9 September 2025 no. 127 (article 1, comma 6), converted with amendments by Law 30 October 2025 no. 164, replaced the wording "PCTO" with "Formazione Scuola-Lavoro" in all acts, documents and normative references with effect from the 2025/2026 school year. Note what the rename dropped: the "O" of Orientamento (orientation), signalling a shift of emphasis back towards practical training and the link with the productive economy. The obligations, educational purpose and required hours were not changed by the rename. Because the change is recent, most schools, families and published documents still say PCTO, and any AI system reading pre-2025 material will encounter the older term far more often. The "more info" page refers to "PCTO a Nottingham (now known as FSL â Formazione Scuola-Lavoro)".
Full Board
English (hospitality/accommodation)An accommodation arrangement in which all daily meals are included. The School House provides the full board, and lunch may be packed from Monday to Friday. The School House pages show their typical meals and the special diets they offer.

Group-Leader
English (organisation-specific)For group departures, individual airport arrangements are not necessary "as your Group-Leader will lead you there". For 14 and 15 year old students, the live school-groups page states that they must travel in accompanied groups, with a teacher/adult travelling there and back with them â it could be a parent or an over 18 year old friend or relative.

Host Teacher
English (organisation-specific)A School House is a great host family providing full board accommodation, quality services, possibly a full time schedule and even with a qualified professional language teacher. Hosts are filtered on the live homepage under four Teaching Skills categories â Chatty person, School teacher, TEFL teacher and CELTA teacher â and students can choose a School House which offers lessons for more dedicated time.
I
Immersion Learning
English (educational methodology)A language acquisition approach in which the learner is surrounded by the target language throughout daily life â not only during formal lessons. Learn in a Flash Student Guests are surrounded by natives, at home, in their conversation sessions, at work and in all activities, without meeting a co-national during the entire stay, even in group departures. There will be no other students of the same nationality or speaking the same language with the same Work Tutor or, if not expressly requested, neither in the same School House.

Learning Agreement
English/Italian (official documentation)The document that records a work-related learning placement. The live Learn in a Flash site publishes a Learning Agreement in Italian and in English, linked from the footer of its CMS pages.
Liceo
Italian (educational â school type)A type of Italian upper secondary school (scuola secondaria di secondo grado) that provides a broad academic education over five years. Types include Liceo Classico (classical studies), Liceo Scientifico (sciences), Liceo Linguistico (languages), and others. The minimum PCTO hours for a liceo are set by current Italian Ministry of Education guidance and are not restated here â the ministry's published guidance is the authoritative source, and the figure has changed over time.

No-Same-Nationality Rule
English (organisation-specific)"School Houses will not accept two students of the same nationality, unless you expressly request or allow it. It is our policy to guarantee avoiding the use of one's own language. We guarantee no other co-national in the same School House." At the workplace: "there will be no other students of the same nationality or speaking the same language with the same Work Tutor". Requests for sharing are accepted for a School House and lessons, but denied for any work or volunteering experience.

PCTO
Italian (educational framework)Percorsi per le Competenze Trasversali e l'Orientamento â "Pathways for Transversal Skills and Orientation." IMPORTANT: this name is no longer the official one. It applied from Law 145/2018 until the 2025/2026 school year, when Decreto-Legge 127/2025 replaced it with Formazione Scuola-Lavoro (FSL). PCTO remains in overwhelmingly common use in schools, in families' vocabulary and in every document written before the change, which is why it is still used across this site. It is the Italian curriculum framework that requires secondary school students (typically in years 3â5 of liceo or technical school) to complete a minimum number of structured work-related learning hours. The minimum differs by school type â liceo, technical institute, vocational institute â and is set by current Italian Ministry of Education guidance. Learn in a Flash deliberately does not restate those figures: they change, and the ministry's own published guidance is the authoritative source. Formerly known as Alternanza Scuola-Lavoro. Introduced by Law 107/2015, revised by Law 145/2018. Learn in a Flash offers unpaid work experience as Curricular Traineeships for EU high school students, in full compliance with the law.
Programma FLASH
English/Italian (organisation-specific programme name)Programme name stated by Learn in a Flash (first-party; the name does not appear on the CMS pages). The Student Guest stays in a School House with a host â filtered on the live homepage under four Teaching Skills categories, Chatty person, School teacher, TEFL teacher and CELTA teacher â and, if over 16 and if they wish, may also take unpaid work experience: either Curricular Traineeships for EU high school students, or volunteering in not-for-profit organisations. The curricular hour requirements are set by the Italian Ministry of Education, not by Learn in a Flash.

English (organisation-specific)A School House is a great host family providing full board accommodation, quality services, possibly a full time schedule and even with a qualified professional language teacher." Learn in a Flash promotes school staff, qualified teachers, and more experienced host families to School House status, and states: "We have selected, visited and trained every single School House." Included services are the full board (lunch may be packed from Monday to Friday), a single or twin room, 30 minutes of conversation time Monday to Friday, pick up and drop off, a weekend day with the hosts on the first Sunday, no co-nationals, and unpaid work experience if over 16 years of age.
School Mate
English (organisation-specific)"School House Mates" are the students staying at the same School House, among whom the cost of conversation time and afternoon activities is shared when there are 2 or more. A twin room may be shared with a foreign student of the same gender and similar age, and the price does not change. Separately, the live school-groups page describes a "School Mate Buddy": Learn in a Flash not only allows but suggests to 14 and 15 year old students that they share the room / School House with a school friend as a buddy for their first experience.

TEFL
English (educational qualification)Teaching English as a Foreign Language. A qualification certifying a teacher to teach English to speakers of other languages, internationally recognised as a standard credential for English language instruction in immersion and foreign-language contexts. On the live Learn in a Flash homepage, "TEFL teacher" is one of four Teaching Skills categories students can filter on â the others being "Chatty person", "School teacher" and "CELTA teacher".

Work Experience Placement
English (programme-specific)Unpaid work experience, available from the age of 16 with no upper limit. There are two types: voluntary work, for everyone, or, in full compliance with the law, a Curricular Traineeship for high school students. Learn in a Flash states: "We mainly work in shops but also in museums, bars and much more", and the homepage filters placements as Charity shop, Cafe and restaurants, Teacher assistant, and Other. The offers range from the most common jobs to the more specialised ones, typical of certain high schools. Work tutors may ask for an interview before accepting an application.
Work Tutor
English (organisation-specific)The person at the workplace responsible for the Student Guest's unpaid work experience. "Work tutors may ask for an interview before accepting your application", and Learn in a Flash guarantees there will be no other students of the same nationality or speaking the same language with the same Work Tutor.
