First of all make sure you have a list of options to offer, and adapt your plan after speaking with your Student Guest on your first day out, which will be a walk around the town centre or your area. For those things which may come at a cost, you must ask students if they agree, such as stopping for a drink, like at the Kitty’s bar or Pitcher and Piano, or sports and fun activities such as bowling, ice skating and so on. We suggest free activities, there are many.
Visiting the city of Nottingham
Hundreds of places you could go and visit. Use filters to see those which are free of charge, good for rainy days or others. 20% of the City is covered by parks and open areas if you like staying out, as well as beautiful cycle paths along many of the canals and parks.
Ready-made and free guided tours
A smartphone can provide a very easy way of touring the city, using the GuidiGO App, you have a virtual guide and the maps created by the city's tourism office such as: Nottingham Trail to visit the major tourist places of interest, Hidden Independent Shoppingto be guided between the various local and independent shops, Creative Quarter Tourfor a tour of the new neighbourhood dedicated to creativity.
Around Nottingham
In the area we can point out places of cultural interest: Newstead and its famous Abbey, Southwell, Lincoln castle and cathedral, and many more in the classic English countryside as well as the famous Sherwood park, Derbyshire Peak District and Derbyshire dales for a walk in nature. Students would find just as interesting a visit to more local boroughs and villages as Ruddington, West Bridgford, Sherwood or Mapperley tops, as a way of showing how different English Towns are.
Events
To find events and what’s on we recommend using the Council's official website, which provides links to other useful sites, here for example one of them filtered for ages Over 12. Other good websites are Eventbrite and
Exceptional
What may seem "normal" for a person, may be extraordinary for others, this happens much when travelling. For EU students for example a Car-Boot sales, a non Catholic mass (very different) or church (the Pitcher and Piano bar and restaurant). Exceptional for students would be visiting a charity shop, travelling on a double-decker, seeing some of the many interesting venues around town, the Pitcher and Piano just to mention one. A visit to a local youth club, library or friend’s house for tea and cake.
